we haven't covered a LeBron in a minute, but after a slow start on the original Heat-themed and trademark Mr. James colourways, the Nike LeBron 9 seems to have found its mojo. It's usually the same pattern — the NikeTalk negativity in comparison to the last chapter after a leaked sample shot, a slow start, then some fresh colourways that set the hype off. Now the LeBron 9 is big business. Just as part 8 evolved throughout the season, releases like this Mango makeup represent the final takes on the shoe in this form before the Elite editions with added Foamposite (and when we chatted to Mr. James late last year he dodged our Foamposite related questions but laughed about it) drop and the low 9's full length air unit offers a more conventional take on Jason Petrie's original creation, one of the most technically advanced basketball shoes we've ever worn. We've been besotted with a few colourways over the last six months — the 'Scarface' versions, the Cannons, the China editions, the Christmas variations and the Galaxy makeover all brought out the best in a versatile model. We even found ourselves riding the hype train on those Givenchy-alike 'Watch the Throne' tie-ins.
We're 9 fans because of the comfort and that locked-in fit, and the Mango edition continues this shoe's lineage of wild colours. The reflective swoosh, speckle and those blasts of a shade that borders on pink make no concessions to subtlety or restrained dressing, but this is the swag era when kids sit in front of cameras to YouTube their boasts about box logo hats and big shoes are a currency. We still couldn't help but notice that these look a bit like a pair of Cannons that have been left in the sun for too long. After the pandemonium around Mags and Foamposites lately, the hi-top as a hard sell in the UK is officially a thing of the past, and the Yeezy 2 delay's got folks scrambling to find somewhere else to splurge that big shoe budget. With that in mind, you could do a lot worse than pick up a pair of these, and the Mango LeBron 9 is in the Crooked Tongues store now. Current RRPs on performance pieces and retros aren't cheap, but the money's no object nature of Nike franchises like the LeBron, with those carbon footbridges and dual technologies in the sole means prices are doomed to slowly escalate. We guarantee that by part 10 you'll be nostalgic for the spring 2012 price point...

When we first clocked a pair of Penny's shoes in a late 1990's issue of 'The Source' complete with the 1-800-432-3061 number, we assumed these had dropped from space. They were just there. In their purest One form, they even ditched a hefty swoosh in favour of a tiny white spot of forefoot branding. What was Nike smoking? In the flesh, if you tapped up central London stockists shifting them at a hefty pricepoint, they looked even weirder. Of course, the Foamposite One is a model of normality compared to the Flightposite's lunacy, but just in case that original blue was too conservative, the Electrolime wasn't wild enough, or the Foamposite Pro in Copper or Electric Green was too subtle for you, maybe this Supernova colourway will fill a gap in your collection.
Created to tie in with the All-Star Weekend in Orlando from the 24th to the 26th of this month, we saw line art which whited out the shape, leading us to believe that there was a white Foam on the way. Then we saw a sample that looked like a 'What the Foamposite' with a tie-die mashup of previous colourways. Now we're seeing this shoe, which is set to arrive in the Crooked Tongues store as a Quickstrike alongside the other All-Star drops (including a the return of the Flight One), in its final form.
Once upon a time, the Foamposite was the domain of Harlemites and Washington DC heads, but we're seeing a gradual sprawl that's spreading the hype beyond the States. Where once you could grab a pair weeks after the launch in Bond Street House of Hoops, we're seeing supplies dry up, culminating in us finally being able to sell a style in the store. We still can't see the shoe converting too many folks. If you think this shoe's ugly and heavy, then that opinion's liable to remain, but the durable nature of the shoe, that perfect molded fit after a day or two's wear and that costly production process, plus the lack of a midsole in favour of extra footbed cushioning makes them a good everyday wear, if you can find a way to offset the bugged out looks with some simple apparel to downplay the astronaut aesthetic. Worldstar videos of crews rapping inanely about Eric Avar's otherworldly masterpiece, and a savage attack caught on camera that used the shoe as a weapon probably don't show it in the best light, but we still maintain that sneaker design lost its balls after the period of progressive insanity post-1997 that created some memorably anti-retro moments.
Ironically, the most progressive sneaker moment in recent history is now a retro staple, but even 2012 hasn't caught up with it. The Foamposite still has looks to last to infinity and beyond. Even in muted tones, the Foamposite is an obnoxious shoe — with a Galaxy on the upper, it's just awesome. Patrick Moore would approve of these. We hope, on their arrival into the earth's atmosphere in 3 weeks' time, the 'Remove Before Flight' tags that we saw in the leak Instagram shots are intact.

We like a good Nike sequel. Bar the bad sequels like Footscape or Rift 2s, for the most part it seems to allow the
Nike design team to study and improve, compensating for any shortcomings and bringing in that new-new. In the running
side, after a blur of fast-forward evolution since Free and Lunarlon came into being, sequels have been considered
affairs that tweak the previous instalment. The Run Free was an office favourite when we first got hold of it in a
similar black and white colourway...then the Lunar Eclipse arrived and...ummm...eclipsed it as our everyday ride of
choice. But that's an unfair comparison anyway - they're two very different shoes, with the Free still on that quest
to replicate barefoot benefits.
This formula of that intricately cut framework, a mesh sock-style fit and some severe-looking Free grooves in the
outsole is a recipe for good-looking shoes — it's the best Free shoe since the Free Trail debuted. The Free Run 2+
is a vast improvement on a tremendous design — the new Free siping pattern is even more flexible, still tricking out
the original Waffle pattern to the next level and the faintly asymmetric lacing pattern makes it a Footscape
offspring of sorts, but the key change here is on the upper. The downside of today's performance pieces is a lack of
natural fabrics — it's all strange, synthetic, featherweight fabrics these days that practically float out the box.
Good for running, where grams affect times, but they can make a shoe feel cheap too.
So you need to compensate with detailing. That’s where the Free Run 2 goes triply hard in the paint. Showboating
with their fancy laser-cutting techniques, the cutaway, layered pattern, blending printed on panels and overlays
evokes the golden age of the massively overlooked Nike Chapuka, but whereas that was some H.R. Giger-esque Alpha
Project madness, the supportive detailing here is based on the ligaments of the foot, endeavouring to imitate their
purpose too. The medial side is interesting too, with a stealthy little cutout swoosh in their, and shades of LeBron
IV on that inner midsole.
This model’s a superior start to the season and having seen what’s in store until the end of the year, we’re
confident that there’s a respite to the reign of the retro with some future cult classics in the mix. It feels nice
to get excited about new shoes again and these are worth regular rotation. The grey/green and white/reds have got us
excitedly for the first time in a short while and these should be hitting running stores and NikeTown imminently…

Nike Sportswear Denim Air Force 1 Low Air Force 1s have been a part of this site since day one. It helped that Crooked's genesis coincided with the Uptown making a full-blown UK debut and that the site launched when US and co.jp exclusives were at their best. Since then, heavyweight campaigns and ID accessibility have taken some of the secret-society mystique from the shoe. After all, a shoe that barely needed to advertise, shouldn't need to make any effort. Still, when it's done right, the Air Force 1 can still eclipse the competition. A correct execution will have us forgetting any acts of shoddy build from recent releases — sometimes it's nice to pick up something that feels heavy in a lightweight era.
This Quickstrike makeup takes the shoe back to a happier time before so much sucked. It actually feels like a 2002 release in spirit. We've seen denim on Air Forces before (denim swooshes win), but these versions go all out. Feeling like a Bespoke in looks and quality, the copper stitch swoosh and contrast is a no brainer that's smartly executed, the off-white midsole and gum sole is excellent, the subtle eyelet switch to brass at the top complements the denim upper with a little nod to the classic button fly too.
We’re loving this shoe. If we had to make any criticism, it would be towards the tongue and heel leather patch branding (which actually looks like it was branded), with that western-style font being inferior to the usual imagery. In contrast, the footbed efforts are particularly nice. A selvedge heel would have been a perfect finisher, but left plain it’s still effective.
The true challenge is what to wear with it. Do you go all-out, and accessorise a double-denim Canadian tux look with these shoes? Can you go triple-denim? Quadruple denim? Maybe you can top an ensemble off with a denim hat. It’s challenging. Perhaps chinos are the solution here, because chunky, navy cotton sneakers with short-shorts might be even harder to execute. Still, when it comes to jeans on jean fabric, at least you don’t have to worry about denim bleed. These are our kind of sneakers. Are Nike Sportswear trying to instigate another golden age of Air Force 1s? We hope so.
These arrive in the Crooked store, and they’re apparently set for release next Wednesday (the 25th of May) in limited numbers. Strange day for a sneaker release, but it’s a shoe that seems to be amassing a great deal of interest.

wow. We never thought we'd see the day when the Jordan X would fly from the Crooked Tongues store, but we're glad to
see its popularity ascend like a leap from the shoe's namesake. For years we had a couple of OG pairs in the store's
inventory, gathering dust, but something happened over the last 12 months...we don't know if it was the free global
shipping or escalating globalisation of sports footwear (it's probably both), but something went crazy. We understood
the success of the excellent Chicagos, but the Old Royal edition few out almost as fast — that's when we knew
something was up. From the shoe's steel-coloured debut with the toecap that was wisely scrapped to recent months,
this model was one for those in the know, whereas the cutoff for wider AJ interest seemed to be part VIII. Now we're
in a whole new world of hype.
When the X dropped in Shadow form as a doublepack with an XIII in early 2008, it was the best of a year of
doublepacks...but not many people seemed to care. The Shadow's a classic too — the check lining, grey and black mix,
plus the red Jumpman detailing was always a great Jordan makeup. These Stealth versions of the Jordan 10 adher to the
winning formula of Stealth colourways in the series and we're sure we saw Kanye wearing a pair a few months back
(that in itself is guaranteed to prime the hype trigger) and they're not massively dissimilar to the Shadows, but
that white and grey on the outsole cuts through the gloom, and the grey details plus the extra black and nubuck
textures on the upper make quite a difference. Folks that appreciate a classic design in a respectful new colourway
and the Rick Owens brigade alike will take to this one with ease and (pending any changes) they drop in the Crooked

Jeremy Scott and adidas Originals have been putting in work since the Forum Hi in 2002, but their ObyO line that launched in 2009 was mutually beneficial for both partners. Seen on the feet of Lil' Wayne and A$AP Rocky, as well as a host of celebrities, the wilful strangeness of these remixes has given them a certain high-end b-boy flavour that's shifting units. This Wings take on the Attitude gives it a washed denim upper, lining and laces with wings and a translucent sole, with plenty of stitch detail in the mix too. These fit a little small, so we recommend going up a size.

All systems are go. We've got the Kobe VI System and now we get the Air Jordan 2012 Deluxe set, offering a semi-bespoke basketball experience. We genuinely don't know how to feel about these interchangeable releases — the Choose Your Own Adventure books of the sports footwear world - and what they bring to the table. In terms of performance, there's no negative in offering the very best, but it's fiddly...very fiddly. The Jordan XX1's switchable heel pods were just the beginning, with the excellent Jordan 2011's drop-in midsoles being a logical progression. They were awkward to replace, but now we get a choice of three drop-in midsoles and two inserts offering two levels of support.
The lower option trounces the higher one in terms of complimenting the silhouette, but choice can be a good thing if you're actually looking to play in them. The overall look of the Jordan 2012 seems marinaded in the formal-footwear theme of the tux-friendly XI from all those years ago — this instalment offers a brogue effect instead, with those embossed premium panels over a supportive dose of Flywire. Is the zoot suit inspiration taken from Jordan's own taste for anti-tailoring? There's been some heated debate over these in the office — why grey and green as a Jordan launch makeup? That's gives these a Jordan spinoff feeling rather than a real Jordan line entry - the All-Star Weekend editions bring out the best in this model. Wasn't that dress shoe effect in the XX3's upper too? Things change and modes of play alter, but our favourite Jordans from back in the day didn't need altering. Maybe it's just a sign of how things are these days — we've got more of a voice to determine projects and that sense of democracy influences what drops. While the big man's outfits constantly hit David Byrne levels of width, at least you can tailor the 2012 to your own needs.
That makes these a very 2012 design in a lot of ways, but we still prefer the 2011s and that vast Jumpman seems at odds with the big branding free look that Jordan shoes have maintained since 1986. The Jordan line's unique lineage never had to shout about what it was, so why make that Jumpman so big? For a shoe that offers such a sense of security in terms of support, that silhouette on the upper makes these seem a little insecure. NBA players have proven that the fancy stuff can be superfluous too by playing in a 1988 Jordan design in the year 2011. There are plenty of details worthy of note though — the midsoles have a pick of a Zoom Air heel (Fly Around) full-length Air bag (Fly Through) or a rear and forefoot blend of Air bag and Zoom (Fly Over) and they're comfort-centric once you've gone through the process of picking your combo (mid insert, Zoom and Air cocktail being our pick). That carbon plate can't have been cheap to add to the outsole either.
The Jordan 2012 packaging is heftier than MJ's distressed denims too — a portable chest of drawers holding the shell at the top, inserts second down and midsoles at the bottom is insane. Opened up, it looks like a stepladder, and you could turn it into a capsule hotel if you felt inclined. It's so lavish that it borders on parody. As ever, when it comes to the hero shoe, Jordan Brand begs no friends again. We're on the fence, just because they've been sat on the desk alongside the IV and X recently, but in the world of Jordans one man's AJVII is another man's AJXV. Each instalment reflects its era and these are undoubtedly a shoe that captures 2012's mess of social media, reference points, hype and constant communication. Better than the 2010 but not as strong as the 2011 from a beyond-the-court angle, these are in the Crooked Tongues store right now.

We actually covered these a few weeks back, but the images were stock ones that were pretty and all but never offered any clues as to how premium these Nike Sportswear Air Max 90 VT Quickstrikes actually are. If there had been a standard Air Max 90 in this makeup we would have become ill with excitement, but in Vac Tech form they've still got us bugging. Why? Because that silhouette isn't compromised by the nubuck application's uninterrupted flow, but the designers still knew to keep the familiar sewn-on ribbed Nike Air patched on the heel. Timberland season officially starts in the early hours of this coming Sunday when the clocks go forward, so all well-executed tributes are welcome.
Nike say "Haystack" but we say Wheat and it's one of our favourite colour and material combinations. That added white midsole is the perfect contrast to the upper and gum outsole while the brown leather lining maintains the theme inside as well as out. These drop alongside the Dunk (which is a lot better in the flesh than we anticipated) today and will be joined by the matching Air Force 1 Hi VT early next week. "Beefy" Botham promoted it and many argue its health benefits, but Wheat will always stay winning.
